Causal relationship and the domino effect.

In 1800 both France and Britain had large empires and continued to grow during the 19^th century

1870 Germany and Italy became united countries for the 1^st time, and both wanted to develop overseas empires.

Key Point: Franco Prussian war. Germany took some land from the France.

In the years up to 1900 there was a strong competition between European powers for expansion.

By 1914 large parts of the world were controlled by various European

Wilhelm II emperor of Germany 1898: Our future lies upon the ocean and started building up the navy very large.

In 1906 Britain launched the HMS Dreadnought, which started the race to build stronger, Bigger and faster battle ships.
