Know the results of Hitler’s applications to the Academy Of Fine Arts Vienna in 1907 and 1908.

HItler took an entrance exam for his dream but did not get accepted because of his artwork. He soon went to vienna where he became politically influenced by a small party called the Nazi’s

Know what happened to Adolf Hitler during WW1. He was a very brave soldier who fought in the war . During the war he was shot twice and ended up in the hospital he was also near death because of poison gas but he survived and gained several medals for the war.

Know the abbreviations of the different political parties during the periods.

The parties of the Republic

The SPD (Social Democrats) were a moderate socialist party and the largest of the parties committed to the Republic. It was strongly anti-communist.

The Centre Party (Zentrum) was set up to defend Catholic interests in 1870. It drew support from all classes. It was present in every Weimar coalition government until 1933. The BVP was its Bavarian ally.

The DDP (German Democratic Party) was a middle class Liberal party. It lost support rapidly after 1920. In 1919 it received 19% of the vote. By 1932 this was down to 1%.

The DVP (German People’s Party) had reservations about the new Republic and at heart they were Monarchists. They were supported by the middle-classes. The outstanding political figure of the Weimar Republic, Gustav Stresemann, was the leader of this party. Its highest point of support was in 1920 when it received 14% of the vote. By 1932 this was down to 2%.

 The opposition of the left

The USPD (Independent Socialist Party) had broken from the SPD in 1917 because they did not support Germany’s continued participation in WWI. It declined rapidly after 1920 with the rise of the Communist party.

The KPD (Communist Party) was formed from the Spartacus Union that had led a revolt against the Weimar government in January 1919. It was very closely allied to Moscow and it refused to co-operate, in any way, with the parties that supported Weimar. They were especially hostile to the SPD. This refusal to support Democratic parties went as far as allying with the Nazis (their sworn enemies) in Reichstag votes. This was in order to further destabilize the Republic

  The opposition of the right

The DNVP (German National People’s Party) was set up in 1918. It was composed of supporters of the old Monarchy. It had strong rural support especially in Protestant areas. They were Hitler’s coalition partners when he came to power in 1933.

The NSDAP (National Socialist German Worker’s Party) was founded in Munich in 1919. At first it favoured the violent overthrow of the Weimar Republic. But after the failed Putsch of 1923 it adopted a legal approach to achieving power. The onset of the Great Depression and the economic chaos of the 1930s greatly aided its rise. It came to national prominence in 1930 when it won 18% of the vote and by 1932 it was the largest party in the Reichstag.

Know when Hitler appointed Chancellor of Germany.

The year 1932 had seen Hitler's meteoric rise to prominence in Germany, spurred largely by the German people's frustration with dismal economic conditions and the still-festering wounds inflicted by defeat in the Great War and the harsh peace terms of the Versailles treaty. A charismatic speaker, Hitler channeled popular discontent with the post-war Weimar government into support for his fledgling Nazi party. In an election held in July 1932, the Nazis won 230 governmental seats; together with the Communists, the next largest party, they made up over half of the Reichstag.

Hindenburg, intimidated by Hitler's growing popularity and the thuggish nature of his cadre of supporters, the SA (or Brownshirts), initially refused to make him chancellor. Instead, he appointed General Kurt von Schleicher, who attempted to steal Hitler's thunder by negotiating with a dissident Nazi faction led by Gregor Strasser. At the next round of elections in November, the Nazis lost ground—but the Communists gained it, a paradoxical effect of Schleicher's efforts that made right-wing forces in Germany even more determined to get Hitler into power. In a series of complicated negotiations, ex-Chancellor Franz von Papen, backed by prominent German businessmen and the conservative German National People's Party (DNVP), convinced Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as chancellor, with the understanding that von Papen as vice-chancellor and other non-Nazis in key government positions would contain and temper Hitler's more brutal tendencies.

Hitler's emergence as chancellor on January 30, 1933, marked a crucial turning point for Germany and, ultimately, for the world. His plan, embraced by much of the German population, was to do away with politics and make Germany a powerful, unified one-party state. He began immediately, ordering a rapid expansion of the state police, the Gestapo, and putting Hermann Goering in charge of a new security force, composed entirely of Nazis and dedicated to stamping out whatever opposition to his party might arise. From that moment on, Nazi Germany was off and running, and there was little Hindenburg or von Papen—or anyone—could do to stop it.

Kristallnacht Crystal Night also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, or was a pogrom (a series of coordinated attacks) against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria on 9–10 November 1938, carried out by SA paramilitary forces and non-Jewish civilians. German authorities looked on without intervening.[1] The name Kristallnacht comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues had their windows smashed.

At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and 30,000 were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps.Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, as the attackers demolished buildings with sledgehammers.Over 1,000 synagogues were burned (95 in Vienna alone) and over 7,000 Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged.Martin Gilbert writes that no event in the history of German Jews between 1933 and 1945 was so widely reported as it was happening, and the accounts from the foreign journalists working in Germany sent shock waves around the world. The Times wrote at the time: "No foreign propagandist bent upon blackening Germany before the world could outdo the tale of burnings and beatings, of blackguardly assaults on defenseless and innocent people, which disgraced that country yesterday."

The pretext for the attacks was the assassination of the German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan, a German-born Polish Jew living in Paris. Kristallnacht was followed by additional economic and political persecution of Jews, and is viewed by historians as part of Nazi Germany's broader racial policy, and the beginning of the Final Solution and The Holocaust.

The Free City of Danzig (now the Polish city of Gdańsk) was separate from both Poland and Germany. A similar territory, also occasionally referred to as a corridor, had been connected to the Polish Crown as part of Royal Prussia during the period 1466–1772.

  - Know about the agreement Hitler had with the Pope on church issues.

The Reichskonkordat (Reich Concordat) is a treaty between the Holy See and Germany negotiated during its transition into Nazi Germany. It was signed on 20 July 1933 by Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli (who later became Pope Pius XII) on behalf of Pope Pius XI and Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen and President Paul von Hindenburg on behalf of the German government respectively. The treaty guarantees the rights of the RomanCatholic Church in Germany, but Nazi breaches of the agreement began almost as soon as it had been signed, leading to protest from the Church, including in the 1937 Mit brennender Sorge encyclical of Pope Pius XI.

The Reichskonkordat is the most controversial of several concordats between Germany and other nations that the Vatican negotiated during the pontificate of Pius XI. It is frequently discussed in works that deal with the rise of Hitler in the early 1930s and the Holocaust. The concordat has been described by some as giving moral legitimacy to the Nazi regime soon after Hitler had acquired quasi-dictatorial powers through the Enabling Act of 1933, though Reichskanzler Hitler himself is not a signatory to the treaty and the treaty does not make mention of Hitler, or the Nazi Party. The source document is addressed to President Paul von Hindenburg.

The treaty places constraints on the political activity of German clergy of the Catholic Church. This contributed to a decrease in the previously vocal criticism of Nazism by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Germany, after September 1933 when the treaty was ratified. From a Roman Catholic church perspective it has been argued that the concordat prevented even greater evils being unleashed against the Church. Though some German bishops were unenthusiastic, and the Allies at the end ofWorld War II felt it inappropriate, Pope Pius XII successfully argued to keep the concordat in force. It is still in force to this day.

Economic policies and benefits

Many German people had suffered during the First World War and the Depression, so welcomed Hitler's economic policies with open arms. There was full employment, new public works and ordinary workers even had the opportunity to purchase a car to drive on the newautobahns [Autobahns: German motorways ].
Economic policy summary

Hitler's economic policy had four main ideas:

Full employment - the idea that everyone should have a job. By 1939, there was virtually no unemployment in Germany.

Beauty of Work - the Nazis set up the SdA (Beauty of Work) to help Germans see that work was good, and that everyone who could work should. In fact - because the Nazis had abolished the trade unions, banned strikes, and given more power to the industrialists - real wages fell and hours were longer under Hitler.

Re-armament begun in 1935 - the idea of 'guns before butter'.

Autarky - there was an unsuccessful attempt at making Germany self-sufficient.
The good life in Nazi Germany

Despite the loss of political and religious freedom, life improved in Germany for many ordinary people who were prepared to 'toe the line' and look the other way.

Hitler opening a new Volkswagen factory.

Everybody had a job, and a wage. To people who had been unemployed and starving, 'work and bread' was a wonderful blessing worth every civil liberty they lost.

The Nazis set up KdF (Strength through Joy), which gave workers rewards for their work - evening classes, theatre trips, picnics, and even free holidays.

The Nazis devised a scheme to allow workers to buy a Volkswagen Beetle car for a small weekly payment.

The autobahns improved transport and travel.

People appreciated the public works - eg new schools and hospitals.

The streets were safe and there was no crime.

Germany was strong and successful in world affairs.

Nazi rallies provided colour and fun.

Nazi Youth groups provided activities and holidays for young people.

Nazi ideology gave people hope and confidence.
How Hitler increased employment

Hitler introduced many policies to fulfil his goal of full employment:

He stopped paying reparations and invested the money in German companies.

He began a huge programme of public works including planting forests, and building hospitals and schools. He also built public buildings such as the 1936 Olympic Stadium. The construction of the autobahns created work for 80,000 men.

Rearmament created jobs in the armaments industry.

The introduction of national service meant all young men spent six months in the RAD  The labour service in which young men in Germany had to do a six-month compulsory stint and then they were conscripted into the army. By 1939, 1.4 million men were in the army, so they were not counted as unemployed.

Many Jews were sacked and their jobs given to non-Jews.

Many women were sacked and their jobs given to men.
Did Germany become self-sufficient?

The policy of autarky Hitler's ideology that wanted Germany to cease trade with the outside world and rely entirely on its own resources was a failure. In 1937, Göring was made Economics Minister with the job of making Germany self-sufficient in four years. However, the measures he introduced were not successful:

Controls were put on imports, but, if anything, imports of luxuries increased.

Scientists tried to make oil from coal and to find substitutes for rubber, petrol, cotton and coffee.

Farmers were subsidised to produce more food, and food imports were reduced.

The stabbed in the back myth by the november criminals

7. Know why the appeal of Hitler and the Nazis increased between 1929

The onset of the great depression along with high unemployment and discontent with the political system made the Nazi party an attractive proposition.

The Nazis ran on populist policies for example they promised to rid Germany of the Treaty of Versailles and promised to solve unemployment. Unemployment had risen sharply between 1929 and by 1933 was approaching the 6.5m mark. Meanwhile the terms of the Versailles Treaty not only crippled Germany economically but also socially. The loans from the USA had to be paid back ahead of schedule - the Dawes and Young Plans and they added to the feeling that Germany was being taken advantage of by other nations. Concurrent to the rise of the Nazis was the rise of communism in Germany and Hitler and the Nazi party were outspoken in their opposition to "Bolshevism" and their emphasis on law and order made them appear a safe bet and gave them credibility With big business and commercial interests which funded their electoral campaigns. Had they not received financial support they too would have gone bankrupt, having spent their money on propaganda campaigns and the SA etc. Under German law if they had gone bust they wouldn't have been allowed to stand in the elections.

This did not happen and the Germans were in no position to continue the war as her army had all but disintegrated. Though this lack of consultation angered them, there was nothing they could do about it. - As there was no single party in overall control parties had to join together to form a government. However, each party had different aims which made it difficult for the Reichstag to govern. Consequently, there were many changes of government which led to political instability. This was reflected in 376 political assassinations up to 1923.

Despite being from the democratic left, during the early 1920s, Friedrich Ebert relied heavily on the traditionally right-wing army and Freikorps in order to keep control of the country.
Conservative attitudes tended to overemphasise the threat from the left, whilst the threat from the right was severely under estimated.
